The Instinct Aesthetic™

Beauty is subjective. Coherence is divine.

A researched map of the twelve visual worlds people recognize themselves in, and the atelier that turns an analysis into an identity.

The position Why the work begins with a diagnosis

Attraction and inhabitation are not the same instinct.

I spent nineteen years as a professor of human relations studying how people construct and defend a sense of self, and wrote two books on narcissism, before I understood that I had been circling a visual question the entire time. Most people can tell you within a second whether a room or a garment or a page belongs to them, and almost none of them can tell you why, which means the ordinary brand questionnaire is more often than not asking someone to report on a preference for which they have never had any language.

The Instinct Aesthetic™ came out of that gap. It holds that the instinctual drive governing how a person moves through the world also governs what they find beautiful, and it names twelve worlds that result, each one a current crossed with a season. Every engagement here begins by finding out which of the twelve a business is actually living in, which is more often than not a different profile from the one it has been decorating itself as.

Zykr Brand Atelier Identity, diagnosed before it is designed

Everyone enters through the diagnostic.

Every engagement begins with a Profile, which is the diagnostic, and what the diagnostic finds determines what gets built. Nobody buys a build here without one, including the founders who arrive certain about what they want, who tend in my experience to be the ones for whom the finding changes the most.

This atelier is a poor fit for a business that needs an identity in three weeks, for anyone comparing on price, and for anyone who wants a designer to execute a decision that has already been made. The diagnostic exists in order to be capable of contradicting the client, and an engagement in which that cannot happen is not worth either party’s money.

Profile

The diagnostic. The Instinct Aesthetic assessment with a written strategic analysis of what the result means for this business. The Profile is a designed object, printed and bound. Credited in full toward Edition or Atelier if commissioned within ninety days.

Edition

An identity built out from one of the twelve profiles and personalized for a single business, including palette, type system, materials direction, and applied examples. Logotype development scoped separately.

Atelier

The full bespoke engagement, running from diagnostic through strategy, naming where a business needs it, the complete visual identity, and the applied system that has to carry all of it. Four to six a year.

Where the calendar stands

I take four to six Atelier engagements in a year, which is a real production constraint and not a positioning device. The useful thing to send is a paragraph about what you are building and what has stopped feeling true about how it currently looks. Editors and press are welcome through the same door.
